Leading up to the National Football League draft, former Clemson star receiver DeAndre Hopkins did not hide his preference for which quarterback his Houston Texans should select.
He wanted fellow Tiger Deshaun Watson.
The scouting staff assessments and front office fondness aligned with Hopkins’ preference. The Texans traded up to draft Watson 12th overall.
While still Cheap Jerseys excited to welcome another Tiger to Texas and optimistic for Watson’s potential ascension, Hopkins could not disregard the rapport he has built with incumbent starter Tom Savage.
Houston coach Bill O’Brien promoted Savage in December to close the season after a fruitless experiment with Brock Osweiler. After the draft, O’Brien reaffirmed Savage as the starter. Last week, Hopkins supported that stance.
“He has earned it, not just from playing, but from the chemistry he has built in the locker room with everybody,” Hopkins told reporters in Houston on Wednesday. “Last year, Cheap nfl Jerseys when he wasn’t playing on the field, he was still showing the guys, telling us what we should do, helping us out like he was the starting quarterback. Now, that he’s in that role, it’s no surprise to anybody on this field that he deserves that role.”
Savage has appeared in merely five more NFL games than Watson. He has averaged 117.6 passing yards per game with no touchdowns and one interception. But through his engagement, in the offense and in the locker room, Savage has earned the trust of his teammates.
“How I define a quarterback isn’t necessarily what you guys would. What you go out there and do on that field, you got to prove it to me,” Hopkins said, reiterating that Watson “hasn’t put on any pads yet.”
Hopkins’ approach may seem stringent, but the best interests of his current team supersede the bias he carries from his former team. The approach will Customized Jerseys benefit both the Texans and Watson long-term.
Clemson fans are eager to see the Watson-to-Hopkins dream combination in the season opener, but patience is more prudent. Watson terrorized Oklahoma, Alabama and Florida State, but the AFC South is far from the ACC.
An apprenticeship would provide Watson time to adjust and optimize his potential without the pressure of being the franchise’s savior. He can learn the playbook progressively and earn his teammates’ trust steadily.
According to Hopkins, Watson is off to a promising start.
“He’s far from where I was as a rookie, mentally,” Hopkins said. “You’ll see him in there in his notebook. As soon as he gets in there, he’s on his iPad looking at DeAndre Hopkins Jerseys plays, trying to get better, trying to make his mistakes right. You can’t do that on the football field. You have to do that off the field. Mentally, he has it.
“It doesn’t go unnoticed. Everybody sees it. Everybody sees what he’s doing outside of the football field, putting in his own time to make himself better and this team.
