Ryan Tannehill story could be telling for Dolphins’ 2018 draft philosophy

on’t dismiss the idea of the Miami Dolphins drafting a quarterback in the first round and keeping him on the bench for a year. Here’s a quick reminder this franchise almost did the same thing with Ryan Tannehill. And he was the No. 8 pick.

In fact, Tannehill probably would have sat on the bench as a rookie if not for a knee injury to veteran quarterback David Garrard during training camp.

The lesson here is it wouldn’t be unprecedented for Dolphins owner Steve Ross to approve drafting a quarterback at No. 11 and having him serve as a backup in his rookie season.

It would actually be history repeating.

The year was 2012.

It was coach Joe Customized Miami Dolphins jerseys Philbin’s first year, a training camp that was saved for posterity by HBO’s Hard Knocks.

Miami had the No. 8 pick, and the Dolphins, coming off a 6-10 season, just as they are now, drafted Tannehill.

He wasn’t guaranteed a starting job.

During training camp he was locked in a three-way fight with incumbent Matt Moore and the newcomer, Garrard.

Early in camp, Tannehill was No. 3 behind Garrard, the free agent from Jacksonville, and Moore, who was 6-6 as a starter in 2010.

As the Dolphins headed into the preseason opener Garrard was injured, requiring surgery.

Tannehill Cheap nfl Jerseys
eventually won a close battle against Moore, and that’s how the No. 8 pick of the draft became a starter as a rookie.

Granted, Miami had a different brain trust in 2012, a different way of thinking.

We don’t know if the current brain trust — executive Mike Tannebaum, general manager Chris Grier and coach Adam Gase — approves of a first-round pick, especially a quarterback, who might not contribute right away.

But we do know as recently as six years ago, Ross wasn’t opposed to the idea.

Will the Rams kick the can down the road with Aaron Donald?

How long can Los Angeles Rams General Manager Les Snead wait to get something done with Aaron Donald?

The big fish in the pond for the Los Angeles Rams come the offseason will be All Everything Aaron Donald. But to listen to General Manager Les Snead, the defensive tackle is on the “to-do” list, but may not be at the top of it.

The Rams have crossed the Rubicon with Donald going back to whatever kind of gentleman’s agreement the two sides had when the DT reported after a relatively brief holdout last summer. A scenario the team knows won’t likely happen this time around.

But should Los Customized Los Angeles Rams jerseys Angeles get into another game of chicken with perhaps the best defensive player in the National Football League, and their best player on the roster?

I don’t doubt the sincerity that comes from Snead when he speaks of Donald and his desire to get that situation resolved. But I also don’t sense it’s keeping him up at night.

And that’s ok, seeing as any holdout by Team Donald pushes back his free agency eligibility for one year. So Snead and the organization have some leverage to slide him down the priority list in 2018, but how far down can the Rams afford to go before irreparable damage is done?

Ultimately, LA knows they’ll have to dig deep as Donald isn’t flattening out as a player. He’s getting better and better on a defense that is still the crown jewel of the Rams. At some point, the bill will come due and each day they wait, the price goes up a little bit more.

They also know that the odds of him Cheap Jerseys getting out of town are perhaps remote as the franchise tag option is another avenue they could go.

But at what cost to the relationship between Donald and the Rams? Money definitely solves a lot of problems, but it’s also a drama that will play out for all to see, not just players in Los Angeles.

Bottom line, Snead has some time to cross a lot of names of his “to-do” list. He just can’t afford to wait on the biggest one before real damage is done.

Chicago Bears Stay or Go: Kyle Fuller

Chicago Bears cornerback Kyle Fuller is going to be a free agent this offseason four years after being drafted. Should the Bears bring him back or not?

Kyle Fuller has had an up and down career in Chicago. He started out with a bang and played well for a rookie, but in his second season with the team, he struggled. Fuller’s third year was spent on the sidelines with a knee injury. His heart was questioned by several people, including coaches. Perhaps, as a result, the Bears decided not to pick up his fifth-year option.

His final year to Cheap nfl Jerseys prove himself was this season. And boy did he deliver. Statistically speaking, it was one of the strongest seasons for a Bears’ cornerback in a long time. Fuller registered 69 combined tackles with 61 of those being solo. He had two interceptions but what was most important was the 22 passes defended he had. That’s a very solid statistic. He was constantly tested by opposing quarterbacks and did not allow many passes to be completed.

Fuller passed almost every test that was given to him in 2017 and made himself a lot of money in the process.

Now, a decision must be made as to what to do with him. Should the Bears re-sign him, or should they let him go into free agency?

There is no doubt that Chicago could use a talent like Fuller opposite whoever they decide to keep or get this offseason on the other side. Having stability at the cornerback position would go a long way towards helping make Chicago’s pass defense one of the best in the NFL. Fuller would be an important part of a growing defense that is just a few pieces away from being great.

He may cost the Bears a little bit of money, but it would be worth it. The Bears need someone like him at cornerback. Why try to find someone else when you have a player who is already familiar with your system, and you are familiar with that player?

The money may be too much for the Bears because Fuller is going to command a lot of it. Chicago should have picked up his fifth-year option but, they didn’t know how he was going to perform. The Bears may decide to look elsewhere for help that might be less Customized Chicago Bears jerseys expensive.

Also, the shadow of the 2016 season may still hang a cloud over the decision makers like Ryan Pace and Vic Fangio. They may not want to relieve a season like that again. But who’s to say it’s going to happen?

In the end, they should keep Fuller. He could be either the best or second best corner on the roster, and the Bears will have one spot locked down.

Washington Redskins: Could Baker Mayfield be the guy if Cousins departs?

It’s mock draft season and one of the most popular projections thus far is Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield going to the Washington Redskins at pick No. 13. The godfather of the NFL Draft media, ESPN’s Mel Kiper, released his first mock draft of 2018 and he had Mayfield going to the Redskins.

Earlier in the week, Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, also pegged Mayfield to Washington. Is this feasible?

Yes, on several fronts. First, everything revolves around current quarterback Kirk Cousins. Will the Redskins and Cousins come to terms on a long-term deal this offseason? That’s doubtful. Cousins himself said he would not sign a deal with Washington until he saw Customized Washington Redskins jerseys whether or not the team would place either the franchise or transition tag on him. At $34 million, the franchise tag isn’t happening. The transition tag, at $28 million, is extremely possible, but it appears doubtful, too.

At this point, it appears both the team and Cousins are content to go in opposite directions. Head coach Jay Gruden has been very candid about his thoughts on Cousins. He obviously likes him, but if he loved him this deal would’ve gotten done a long time ago. Cousins has appeared ready to move on for a while now.

The Redskins love big names. Owner Daniel Snyder and his chief lackey, team president Bruce Allen, orchestrated the trade for Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III back in 2012. The team reaped the benefits of Griffin’s acquisition, mostly off the field. Griffin’s jersey was a huge hit in 2012 and he was must-see TV. Then, Griffin got hurt and everything fell apart. Yet, Snyder and Allen struggled to turn the page.

They likely see the same thing with Mayfield. The Heisman Trophy winner is brash, fiery and successful. He would serve the purpose of selling hope to an angry and frustrated fan base. And Mayfield, despite some concerns about his size, is a talented prospect. He Cheap nfl Jerseys could be a huge success under offensive-minded head coach Jay Gruden. Gruden, a scrappy former quarterback, likely sees a little of himself in Mayfield.

Washington made an underrated move after the season in keeping quarterbacks coach Kevin O’Connell on the staff. O’Connell had an opportunity to join Chip Kelly’s staff at UCLA as offensive coordinator, but Gruden saw promise in the young coach and added an extra title — passing game coordinator — to keep him with the Redskins. O’Connell has experience working in the spread and traditional pro-style offense, so his return could be huge if the Redskins do choose someone high in the upcoming draft.

The Senior Bowl is next week and Mayfield will play in the showcase game. Expect Washington coaches to pay close attention to the Heisman winner. It’s way too early to say whether the Redskins are fans of Mayfield.

Jon Gruden’s bringing Tom Cable back to Raiders raises eyebrows

Jon Gruden’s bringing Tom Cable back to the Oakland Raiders as his offensive line coach is the first head-scratching hire of Gruden’s second tenure in Silver and Blackdom.

Of course, there are ways to utilize zone blocking to fit the Raiders’ skill set in the trenches, such as pull and pin, but as PFF notes, if any offensive-minded coaches can figure it out, Gruden and Cable should be right there.

That seemingly would be good news for Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch, who is due a base salary of $4 million in 2018 with a cap number of $6 million.

It was the addition of Lynch to Oakland last season that hastened the switch from power to zone on the line, and Lynch excelled in Seattle after Cable arrived in 2011.

Lynch broke off seasons of 1,204, 1,590, 1,257 and 1,306 yards rushing, with 12, 11, 12 and 13 rushing TDs, in his first four seasons with Cable as Customized Oakland Raiders jerseys Seattle’s O-line coach.

Lynch is more than friendly with Cable. Asked his initial thoughts on the Seahawks’ O-line coach before Super Bowl XLVIII, Lynch did not hold back.

“Well, being from Oakland, all I knew about him was that he punched people,” Lynch said at the time. “That’s my type of person.”

Which brings us back to Cable’s stormy departure from Oakland after two-and-a-half years as Raiders head coach.

Cable did indeed change the culture in Oakland after replacing Lane Kiffin five games into the 2008 season. But even as he ended a seven-year streak of at least 11 losses by the Raiders with an 8-8 season in 2010, which included a 6-0 mark against the AFC West, his “we’re not losers any more” comment did not sit well with Al Davis.

“If that’s not being a loser in our world, I don’t know what is,” Davis said. “Come on, .500? That’s never been my goal.”

Plus, Davis fined Cable $120,000 from his last six game checks for the, ahem, strain he put the organization under as a result of lawsuits accusing him of assaulting assistant coach Randy Hanson and an ex-girlfriend.

Hanson accused Cable of breaking his jaw and knocking out some teeth in a training camp scrap by throwing him against a hotel room wall, with the left side of his face hitting a table. Hanson claimed Cable hit him again while he was on the floor, prompting assistants Willie Brown, John Marshall and Lionel Washington to pull Cable away.

After the story broke, Raiders players greeted Cable on the field with chants of “Cable, bumaye,” hearkening the chants Muhammad Ali heard in “The Rumble in the Jungle” against George Foreman.

“Can’t get the story,” Davis said. “You know, it’s like Gitmo. Trying to find out: Did they waterboard those guys or not? No, really, it’s hard to believe. How many guys went in? Four guys went into the room with a guy, the guy comes out with a broken jaw, and no one saw it.”

Cable also was accused of physical Cheap Jerseys abuse by three women, including two ex-wives, and Davis referenced those allegations as further reason for firing Cable, even as Davis allowed Cable to coach after the incidents purportedly happened.

Expect Raiders owner Mark Davis to have a sit-down with Cable and/or Gruden in the near future. Davis has a “zero tolerance” policy for domestic violence.

Cable’s return to Oakland might not be as incredible a development as Gruden coming back, but it’s in the same conversation. Especially when you consider Cable’s comments in his final appearance as Raiders coach, when he was asked if he had any regrets from that 2010 season.

“Not a one,” Cable said. “I wish we were better in the turnover department. I wish we were better in the penalty department. I also like the fact we play our butts off, an

Jaguars handle Steelers, crash AFC Championship Game party

With each close play or each game-changing swing, Tom Coughlin nervously chewed gum and scribbled notes. He occasionally stopped to offer a comment to general manager Dave Caldwell, seated to his right.

The man in charge of installing a winning culture with the Jacksonville Jaguars did this the entire game. By this point, it was out of his control. But in a game with wild momentum swings, the work he did leading up to this point as executive vice president of football operations proved to be just enough.

The Jaguars upended the Steelers 45-42 on the road and clinched their spot in next weekend’s AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots. The output tied the mark for most points ever scored on the Steelers in a postseason game.

Much as it was in Cheap Jerseys Week 5’s 30-9 Jaguars victory here at Heinz Field, Jacksonville’s defense and rushing game was pivotal. But it was an unlikely – and much-criticized player – who helped secure the Jaguar victory.

Quarterback Blake Bortles, who rushed for more yards last week (88) against the Bills than he threw for (87), converted key third downs in the fourth quarter, made smart decisions and helped keep the Steelers at distance.

He completed 14 of 26 passes for 214 yards and one touchdown.

Rookie running back Leonard Fournette, who left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury but returned after halftime, ran the ball 23 times for 101 yards and three touchdowns.

The Jaguars roared out to a 21-point lead and at times looked like they would pull away, including after linebacker Telvin Smith’s 50-yard scoop-and-score fumble recovery in the second quarter. But the Steelers clawed back in the second half, drawing to within one score at four different points in the fourth quarter.

But by the time Ben Roethlisberger found JuJu Smith-Schuster for a 4-yard scoring strike to cut the deficit to three, there was just one second left.

Jacksonville’s pass Customized Jacksonville Jaguars jerseys rush made a few big plays, sacking Roethlisberger twice. But the group wasn’t consistent enough. On some dropbacks, Pittsburgh’s offensive line pushed back and offered Roethlisberger ample time to throw.

It was with that time that Roethlisberger dropped three pivotal touchdowns in 14 minutes and 11 seconds of game time, spanning from the middle of the second quarter to the middle of the third. Each pass was perfectly placed where only the Pittsburgh players, receivers Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant and running back Le’Veon Bell, could catch them.

Entering the game and including the playoffs, Roethlisberger has had 19 career rushing attempts on fourth-and-1. He converted 18 of them for first downs. Yet, questionable play calls in those situations twice crushed Pittsburgh’s momentum.

Down seven points with 12:50 left in the game, the Steelers faced a crucial fouth-and-1 from Jacksonville’s own 39-yard line. The call was a play-action pass that fell incomplete.

Texans draft class features playmakers Deshaun Watson, D’Onta Foreman

Regardless of who comes out of the Houston Texans’ 2017 draft class, this group is a massive success because of what rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson accomplished before his season-ending torn ACL.

The group also has a couple of intriguing prospects who could develop into solid players who could help Watson in the future. Here’s a look at the Texans’ 2017 draft class:

Best rookie: Even though he played in only seven games before tearing the ACL in his right leg in an early November practice, Watson was the Texans’ standout rookie, by far. He was having one of the best ever seasons for a rookie quarterback — he threw for 1,699 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions and added 269 yards and two scores on the ground — and was on pace to shatter the rookie record for passing touchdowns. Watson’s season was cut short, but he is expected to be healthy for the start of the 2018 season.

Most improved rookie: The Texans liked what they saw from running back D’Onta Foreman during their offseason program, but head coach Bill O’Brien noted that the second-round pick needed to get in better football condition. Foreman had an up-and-down Customized Houston Texans jerseys season and even had a game without a carry in Week 8 against the Seattle Seahawks. But in the Week 11 game against the Cardinals when he tore his left Achilles, Foreman had his best performance of the season with 65 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. The former Texas standout was the backup running back behind Lamar Miller, but if he can pick up where he left off next season, Foreman could challenge Miller for the majority of the carries in 2018.

Most disappointing rookie: Defensive tackle Carlos Watkins got off to a slow start, according to O’Brien. In the Texans’ first five games, Watkins was inactive for three and did not play in a fourth. O’Brien said the fourth-round pick had a hard time early in the year because it took him a little while to get used to playing against bigger, stronger players in the NFL as opposed to the players he faced at Clemson. The head coach said he has seen Watkins improve throughout the season and that he thinks the defensive lineman is “going to be a good player.”

Jury is still out on …: Julién Davenport. With all the injuries on the offensive line, the Texans’ coaching staff has had a chance toward the end of the season to see what some of the younger linemen can do. Davenport started at left tackle in Week 16 and “held his own in there against some good competition,” according to O’Brien. Davenport was a fourth-round pick, but at the time of Customized Jerseys the draft, O’Brien and general manager Rick Smith acknowledged he would need a lot of development before he was a finished product in the NFL. Given that left tackle Chris Clark and right tackle Breno Giacomini are free agents, with a strong offseason and training camp, Davenport could compete for a starting tackle job next season.

Undrafted rookie evaluation: The best player in the Texans’ undrafted class was linebacker Dylan Cole. Houston liked him a lot coming out of the draft, and after Brian Cushing was suspended for 10 games, Cole got off to a good start before he injured his hamstring in Week 5. He has come back from the injury, and contributed on defense and special teams. O’Brien said he has also been impressed by how disruptive wide receiver Chris Thompson has been on special teams.

Steelers’ Joe Haden takes a little jab at Browns in preparation for 1st playoff game

Former Browns cornerback Joe Haden, who will experience the thrill of a playoff game Sunday for the first time in his eight-year NFL career, couldn’t help but take a little jab at his former team for letting him go.

“They were going to pay Brock Osweiler $16 million and he’s not even on the team (after being cut by the Browns on Sept. 1) and they wanted to cut money from me!” he told Sports Illustrated this week as his 13-3 Steelers prepare to host the Jaguars.

According to Haden, former Browns general manager Sashi Brown told Haden in August that he was no longer a top five corner, and asked him to take a payout from his $11.1 million base salary. Instead, Haden asked to be released, and Brown obliged — 11 days before the season opener against the Steelers, who snatched him up immediately.

Haden jumped at the Cheap nfl Jerseys chance to play for his former arch-rivals, signing a three-year deal worth $27 million.

“They’re dumb — that’s Cleveland,” Steelers safety Mike Mitchell told si.com. “You can’t find a top-10 corner in September; that just doesn’t happen. He was the final piece.”

On Thursday, Haden, who keeps in touch with his friends on the Browns, also told espn.com that the Perfect Season parade was “really lame.”

“It is what it is,” Haden said. “I feel like if you want to be that miserable and go have an 0-16 parade, then have fun.

“I just think it’s lame. I think they went 0-16, the organization and everybody is not happy with it. I feel like the fans, they’re not going to be happy about celebrating an 0-16 parade. I just think it’s really lame.”

The week before the Steelers’ 28-24 victory over the Browns in the season finale, Haden told The Pittsburgh Tribune Review, “I’m just excited this isn’t my last game of the year.”

He added, “once I got Customized Cleveland Browns jerseys released by Cleveland, I just knew that I had a bright future ahead of me.”

Haden also said, “it’s a blessing to be here on this team going into the playoffs. If I was still there, I would have been still playing the same amount: hard, giving it everything I got. I could easily be in that position.

“I’m here, not doing anything different but it’s a completely different outcome. My skill set, (the Browns) felt like they didn’t need any more. But here, it’s accepted and appreciated, and I couldn’t be any happier.”

Steelers center Maurice Pouncey couldn’t believe his former Gators teammate dropped into the team’s lap.

“We all still think it’s crazy that he’s on our team, like, ‘Y’all let go of Joe Haden?’ ” he said. “The way he works, the way he carries himself, you can only appreciate that type of guy. I think he’s changed this team dynamic defensively. Honestly, it’s unreal. You don’t see those types of moves in the NFL. When you do, it’s like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that happened.”’

Kellen Moore to retire from playing

Jason Garrett went directly from NFL quarterback to coaching the position when his playing days ended. History appears ready to repeat itself on Garrett’s staff with the Dallas Cowboys.

A source told Sporting News that Kellen Moore is expected to retire and become the Cowboys’ new quarterbacks coach.

The possibility of Moore making the move was the subject of Cowboys media speculation this past week following the departure of quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson, a move first forecast last Monday by Sporting News. Wilson’s contract is expiring and will not be renewed.

Moore is only 28 in comparison to Garrett, who was 39 when hired as Miami’s quarterbacks coach in 2005 by then-Dolphins head coach Nick Saban. Customized Dallas Cowboys jerseys
Moore, though, has spent five of his six NFL seasons under the tutelage of Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, dating back to when both began working together with the Detroit Lions in 2012.

That relationship gives Moore intimate knowledge of Linehan’s offensive system.

Moore’s background also gives him a solid foundation to begin a coaching career. His father Tom won four state championships and 21 league titles as head coach at Prosser High School in Washington.

Moore was released by the Cowboys during the 2017 season. All three of his career NFL appearances came with Dallas in 2015 when replacing an injured Tony Romo (collarbone). Moore went 0-2 as a starter with four touchdowns, six interceptions and a 58.7 completion percentage.

Moore Cheap nfl Jerseys entered the 2016 season as Romo’s backup but suffered a broken leg early in training camp. That opened the door for then-rookie Dak Prescott to play when Romo injured his back later in the preseason. Prescott kept hold of the job, Romo retired in the 2017 offseason and Moore never played in the regular season again.

Provided the hiring is finalized, Moore would now be responsible for spearheading Prescott’s ongoing NFL development.

Moore was one of the most prolific quarterbacks in college football history, becoming the first to ever win 50 games during his time at Boise State. He went undrafted largely because of concerns about his size — he carries 200 pounds on a lean, 6-foot frame — and arm strength.

Pros and cons for the Patriots with each possible playoff foe

Bill Belichick chanted “no days off” at the team’s Super Bowl parade last February, and Thursday was a good example of how he truly means it.

Despite blizzardlike conditions in New England and the Patriots being on their playoff bye week, Belichick required players to be at the facility for a regular day of work. The snow had yet to start falling when players arrived in the early morning, but by the time of their midmorning practice, it was whiteout conditions.

Tom Brady: ‘Still writing our story, hopefully we write a good one’
The Patriots don’t have a game this weekend, but don’t tell their quarterback. “It’s still football season. It’s not a week off at all,” he said.
Players made the Customized New England Patriots jerseys long walk from their locker room to the team’s indoor practice bubble, which was adventurous.

“That was a lot of wind. It would have been interesting if we played today,” quarterback Tom Brady said. “I don’t know what would have happened. It would have been tough, kind of like Buffalo had that one against Indy this year.”

Asked if he has adapted to shoveling snow, having been in New England for 18 years, Brady said, “It’s pretty tough. Car is tough. Everything is tough this time of year. Especially the cold. Everyone in New England is probably having a crappy day today. That’s part of it.”

Players were especially careful as they walked up and then down the metal set of bleachers to get to practice, mixing in some fun along the way.

“It was cold, windy, but they cleared a path for us, so fortunately we didn’t have to walk through the snow and get your feet all cold and things. A lot of snowballs thrown on that walk,” third-year defensive end Trey Flowers said. “Somebody got hit from a distance. It was a pretty good throw.”

Added core special-teamer Brandon King: “Everybody here’s working, so you’re just trying to bring some light into the day.”

Belichick’s philosophy has traditionally been to practice in the elements, with the thinking that the team could eventually be playing in them. He said early on Thursday, however, that moving inside was the best thing for the team as it prepares to host a divisional-round playoff game on Jan. 13 against the Kansas City Chiefs, Tennessee Titans or Buffalo Bills (8:15 p.m. ET).

It was one of only a handful of indoor practices for the Patriots this season.

“It’s pretty Cheap nfl Jerseys nasty, but it was nice to be in the bubble,” Brady said. “These conditions, it’s been that kind of year here — abnormally cold. I think it’s been good for us to get out and practice in it, but today, it would have been impossible.”

That’s why King, who tied for second on the team with eight special-teams tackles, said Thursday’s practice wasn’t as bad as what players went through last week.

“You see all the snow, but it’s nothing like practice was with the negative-1, zero degrees, with all the wind blowing,” he said. “It’s still 30 degrees warmer than it was a week ago. It’s not that bad at all.”

Asked how much the bad weather conditions reflect the accountability of his team, Belichick wasn’t handing out compliments.

“I don’t know,” the coach said. “Every day is a work day.”
